I've been extracting US NES ROMs from Virtual Console releases.

Some of these have obvious differences or real-time workarounds Ninty used; for example, SMB2's waterfalls and explosions use unused colors (0D and 0E/1E/2E/3E), SMB3's Boom Boom/?-ball explosions are only peach instead of flashing, but there are still some differences in other games to be found.

You can use 'fc /b (original) (vc)' to scan for differences. Usually the VC versions are based the later PRG1 versions were available.

Please post any differences you find in this thread, along with what version it matches up to. Even if the releases are exactly the similar, post about it after confirming so we can build a comprehensive list.

DIFFERENCES LIST
For all comparisons, original goes on the left/top, VC version goes on the right/bottom.

I can't remember where exactly I saw it, but there is a text change for Punch Out!! in Piston Honda's dialogue, taking out the Japanese TV station name and replacing it with...something else. I know someone documented it but right now I can't remember where.

Yay, Xk got the torrent.

Checked out the Punch-Out rom... there are a few byte changes in there which I think are palette changes for OMG SEIZURE CONCERNS, but there was a change in Piston Honda's dialogue which sounds completely ridiculous.

Old: "WHERE IS THE NHK TV CAMERA"
New: "WHERE ARE MY CAMERA CREW"

~likely compressed stuff~
Castlevania III
Clu Clu Land
Crash 'n the Boys - Street Challenge
Donkey Kong 3
Life Force
Mega Man 4
Megaman 2
Megaman
Super Dodge Ball
Ufouria - The Saga
Zoda's Revenge - StarTropics II

Also, this friend of mine knows a lot of stuff, so here goes:
194131 <Blaziken257> I remember when playing Zelda II on my GBA, when dying, the flashing effect was really toned down compared to the NES version.
194154 <Blaziken257> On the NES version, it flashed many colors, on the GBA, it was just bright red and dark red and it was slower.
Sounds like what we've found — except I looked into Zelda 1 Classic NES and couldn't find a ROM, and instead found some mangled Zelda II graphics. Needs investigation!

194231 <Blaziken257> There's something similar in Metroid when beating Mother Brain.
194239 <Blaziken257> I know the GBA version has different text too
194250 <Sanky> We have a list of changes in Metroid, too
194251 <Blaziken257> It's less Engrishy
194259 <Sanky> I just worked on Zelda
194304 <Sanky> Zelda 1, I mean
194309 <Blaziken257> I know for Metroid the copyright date was updated and it says "PRESS START"

194348 <Blaziken257> I have Metroid Prime and Metroid: Zero Mission with the NES Metroid unlocked on both, and they're slightly different
194403 <Blaziken257> In MP, when beating Mother Brain, it flashes black/white rapidly, but on M:ZM, it's slower

194506 <Blaziken257> Oh and by the way, the Animal Crossing version of Zelda I is based off the original NES version, i.e. Engrish text

195042 <Blaziken257> By the way, there was something weird that I noticed with Excitebike.
195111 <Blaziken257> Supposedly the NES version has a Save/Load option (which only works in the Japanese version), but when I played it on Animal Crossing I never noticed those options

195206 <Blaziken257> Also speaking of Famicom Mini/Classic NES Series, there's also something odd with SMB2j
195218 <Blaziken257> I have the GBA version of it (the Japanese SMB2 that is)
195222 <Blaziken257> And there's a difference...
195304 <Blaziken257> After beating World 8-4 eight times, you can play worlds A-D
195318 <Blaziken257> In the Famicom Disk System, you have to press A+Start on the title screen to access those
195332 <Blaziken257> In the GBA version (and I heard the VC version too), you have to press B+Start instead
195336 <Blaziken257> A+Start does something else...
195412 <Blaziken257> It sends you back to the last world you died on, which is useful when you turn the game off (it saves it)
195436 <Blaziken257> Oh and the GBA version saves your high score, whereas the FDS version doesn't
195510 <Blaziken257> Although all the Famicom Mini/Classic NES Series games do that though...

200108 <Blaziken257> Oh yeah, I was wondering something about Mega Man 2
200133 <Blaziken257> I was playing the NES version on Nestopia, and there's this dragon boss where every time you hit him, the screen flashes rapidly
200143 <Blaziken257> Was that fixed in the VC version (assuming there is one)?

200316 <Blaziken257> Oh yeah, when you get to SNES, I heard of a couple of things from the DKC games
200410 <Blaziken257> In DKC, there's a level called Torchlight Trouble, and in DKC2, there's a level called Glimmer's Galleon, where in both levels, they are dark but there are animals that light up the screen.
200421 <Blaziken257> When you change direction, there's one frame where the screen goes entirely white
200430 <Blaziken257> I heard that was fixed in the VC versions..

202352 <Blaziken257> Oh yeah, the VC version of Kid Icarus has something weird with passwords, too...

I know that the names of a few things in StarTropics were changed for whatever reason. One example that I remember is that the "Yo-yo" was changed to the "Island Star" (or something like that), you can see this near the very beginning of the game when you receive the Yo-yo in the Chief's Hut.

Yeah, I did a quick check of the StarTropics rom before... every single instance of "YOYO" in the script was changed to "STAR".

...Oh, and the StarTropics rom I had happened to have "DiskDude!" in the header; that's obviously *NOT* in the VC rom.

Yo-yo is a trademarked term, if I recall correctly- I guess they're more worried about that sort of thing now than they were then.

I think the Yo-Yo was renamed because "Yo-Yo" is technically a trademark. I guess that slipped by in the NES era.

Same with NHK TV, I guess. Need to see if any of those other games had potential trademark names.

I'm glad that Earthbound was NOT released for the SNES VC. Imagine all the changes we'd find in that...

Another difference that I just remembered StarTropics is that the boss that is shown at 6:50 in this video (which is from the end of Chapter 7) takes a significantly lower number of hits to defeat if you decide to damage it to death (as opposed to knocking it off the edge as is done in the video) in the VC version then it does in the NES version.

At least I'm 95% sure that it wasn't just my imagination, I would confirm it right now it I was at home where both my Wii and NES are.

Of course, although I've been trying to find a save file of a completed game so that I don't have to play through the entire thing. My cart and Wii at home would already have that...

If worst comes to worst, you can use the TAS movie to get there.

BMF would like to point out to everybody that the flashing when an airship moves and a warp whistle is used was removed, and the flashing background for Bowser's letter from World 7's ending were slowed down significantly.

P.S. BMF For the love of god please get better at documenting your discoveries so that we don't end up forgetting them

So what's the proper generic name for those things, anyway? I doubt there's only the one brand...

Pretty sure it's a new handler for the flashing on W7's letter.

The code that jumped to the Warp Whistle/Airship flashing was just NOPped out.
